Frank Handelman has a long and varied background as a coach, both in track and field and long distance running.
Frank is a USA Track and Field Level 1 and Level 2 certified coach. Early in his career, he coached college track and cross country at Adelphi University and later Hunter College. From 2007 to 2010, he served as Head Coach and Training Director of New York Road Runners Team for Kids, an adult running team that raises money for school-based fitness and health programs in New York City, all 50 states and Cape Town, South Africa.
At Team for Kids, Frank designed and managed a long distance training program that directly served hundreds of runners in the New York City area and thousands more online who were training for the ING New York City Marathon, the New York City half-marathon and other races. Many of the runners were training for their first marathons and had no previous running or racing experience. Under Frank’s guidance, over 4500 runners finished the marathon, with some cutting their finishing times by over an hour by their second year in the program.
Frank began his running career in high school and has competed at every distance from 400 meters to the marathon.
At the University of Pittsburgh he set school records in cross country, the indoor mile and 1000 yards and was the captain of the cross country and track teams. He competed for the world-famous University of Chicago Track Club while in graduate school and after moving to New York, ran for the New York Pioneer Club.
He is an original member of the Central Park Track Club New Balance, one of the Nation’s premier track and field and road running teams.
Frank won road races in New York and cities throughout the Northeast and Midwest at distances from three miles to 30 kilometers and was the winner of the first Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile race in Central Park in 1977. As a master’s runner, he won many titles, including National Masters 800 meters indoor championships in 2003 and 2007. His best times range from 1:54 for the 800 meters to 14:49 for the 5000 meters, 19:35 for four miles and 51:16 for 10 miles. Frank competed in 15 marathons, running 2:35 in the Boston and Yonkers Marathons.
I’ve known Frank Handelman since 1998. Great athlete, but even better coach. Frank understands all the components for racing fast - the training, the strategy, the mental aspect.
He’ll devise a training program specifically geared to improving your times. Whether you're a novice or an elite, you want to run fast? Go to Frank.
